Dental bonding
Dental bonding
- Only one visit needed
- Anaesthetic usually not required
- Cost effective highly aesthetic option.
Dental bonding or teeth bonding involves applying a tooth-coloured resin to your teeth which is shaped and set with an ultraviolet light.
Dental bonding is one of the most conservative methods to repair chipped teeth, fill cracked teeth and change your smile. The procedure is quick, cost effective and usually requires no anaesthesia.
Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that uses a tooth-coloured composite resin material to enhance your smile. It is sometimes called composite bonding.
This procedure is used to repair chips, close down gaps or change the shape and colour of a tooth. Unlike other cosmetic dental treatments, such as porcelain veneers, dental bonding is completely reversible.
During the procedure, your dentist applies tooth-coloured resin material to the affected teeth to change their shape, size or colour.
The procedure uses tooth-coloured composite resin material to:
- Conceal chips or cracks in your teeth
- Hide discolouration
- Close gaps and spaces between your teeth
- Make your teeth look longer
- Change the shape of your teeth.
- The same composite resin material used in bonding is also used in fillings.
Dental bonding is one of the most frequently performed procedures in dentistry today.
What’s the difference between bonding and veneers?
Porcelain veneers are custom-made ceramic shells that adhere to the front surfaces of your teeth. To place them, your dentist typically must remove some enamel from your natural teeth. Once placed, porcelain veneers are not reversible. They’ll need replacing every 10 to 20 years.
Dental bonding may not require significant enamel removal. As a result, bonding is completely reversible. You’ll probably need touch-ups every 3 to 10 years.
Composite veneers (if you heard the phrase) use composite resin material to cover the entire surface of your tooth.
Prior to dental bonding, you will need X-rays to examine your teeth and gums and underlying bone, to ensure you are suitable for treatment.
During the treatment:
- You select a shade with Harry Shiers
- Harry then prepares the tooth for bonding. This involves roughening the tooth surface and a conditioning liquid is applied. These steps help the bonding material stick to your tooth.
- The composite resin material is applied, moulded and smoothed
- The resin is ‘cured’ to make it hard
- The it is polished.
It takes 30-60 minutes per tooth.
Dental bonding usually isn’t painful because your dentist won’t be working anywhere close to the pain-sensing nerve inside your tooth. Mostly, anaesthetic injection is not needed.
Cosmetic dental bonding offers many benefits compared to other cosmetic treatments, including:
- Cheaper
- Reversible
- Touch-ups are quick and cheap and easy to do
- It is minimally invasive, not requiring removal of enamel
- It is fast and convenient.
Teeth bonding requires no downtime. You’ll be able to resume all normal activities as soon as you leave the practice.
Typically, bonding material lasts between three and 10 years before needing to be touched up or replaced.
In general, dental bonding doesn’t pose any risks to your oral health. If you have healthy teeth and gums, then it’s perfectly safe.
However, if you have extensive tooth decay, gum disease or other serious issues affecting your oral health, you may need to have other treatments before pursuing dental bonding.
