Are you ready to start your new patient journey?

At your first consultation

After making an initial appointment with Harry at Harley Place, we will send you a welcome email confirming the date and time of your consultation, as well as what to expect when you visit Harry.

Meeting Harry

When you arrive at the practice, you will be greeted by Janice on reception, who will assist you to our relaxing waiting room where you can fill in a medical history form in comfort.

The renowned friendly welcome

After completing the medical history form, our head nurse will accompany you into the dental surgery where Dr Shiers will be waiting to welcome you to begin your consultation.

Your examination

Our aim is to ensure you are comfortable throughout, and if you feel particularly anxious, please let us know and feel assured that our team are highly experienced in helping and guiding patients during every step of this journey.

Before carrying out any oral examinations and X-rays, Dr Shiers will discuss any concerns about your current dental health and any wishes you may have about enhancing your smile, comfort and function. This is completed in a friendly and no-pressure atmosphere.
An important part of this initial discussion is to learn about your past and recent dental experiences, whether negative or positive.

Our aim is to exceed your expectations, enhancing your positive experiences and ensuring that any negative experiences you may have had are not repeated.

During every dental check-up we carry out an eight-point oral health check. We look at the health and function of your teeth, gums and jaw to make sure your oral health is the best it can be.

Dr Shiers is associated with the Mouth Cancer Foundation. So if he notices anything concerning, he can refer you to a specialist doctor for further tests and to confirm a diagnosis. The earlier mouth cancer is identified the better the chances are of a full recovery.

Here’s what you can expect during Harry’s dental examination

1. Medical History Review: your dentist will start by asking about your overall health and any changes in your medical history, medications, or allergies. It’s crucial to provide accurate information as it can impact your oral health.

2. Oral Examination: the dentist will perform a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums. They will look for signs of decay, gum disease, or other oral health issues. They may use a small mirror and dental instruments for a closer inspection.

3. X-rays: if required, they can provide a more detailed view of your teeth and jawbone. They help detect issues that may not be visible during a visual examination, such as cavities between teeth or problems with your jawbone.

4. Oral Cancer Screening: Dentists also check for signs of oral cancer during a dental examination. They may examine your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and the roof of your mouth for any unusual lumps, sores, or discolourations.

5. Gum Health Assessment: Your dentist will evaluate the health of your gums by measuring the depth of gum pockets around your teeth. Deep pockets can be a sign of gum disease.

6. Tooth Alignment and Bite: The dentist may check for issues related to tooth alignment or your bite (how your upper and lower teeth come together). Misalignment can lead to various dental problems and discomfort.

7. Treatment Plan: Based on their findings, your dentist will discuss any issues they’ve identified and develop a treatment plan if necessary. This could include recommendations for fillings, crowns, root canals, orthodontic treatment, or gum disease management.

8. Oral Hygiene Tips: Your dentist and dental hygienist will provide advice on maintaining good oral hygiene at home. They may recommend specific toothbrushing and flossing techniques and discuss the importance of a balanced diet for dental health.

9. Follow-up Appointments: Depending on the findings and the recommended treatment plan, your dentist may schedule follow-up appointments to address specific issues or for routine check-ups.
